Betty Berry, Wednesday, October 28, 2009  Q: Is there any type of testing that might provide information about potential risk for memory loss? Who should be screened?

A: Your questions are very timely.

Every year the Alzheimer's Foundation of America selects a day in November as National Memory Screening Day, when sites nationwide offer free confidential memory screenings and educational materials. This year, Senior Concerns will hold its "Memory Screening Day" seminar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14. The event will be at the Senior Concerns Adult Day Care Center, 401 Hodencamp Road, Thousand Oaks.

The event will include speakers, complimentary memory screenings, demonstrations and information booths.

From 9 to 11:30, speakers will present information on normal memory loss, practices to keep your brain healthy and resources for dealing with memory care issues. Senior Concerns will introduce its newest offering, the "Brain Fitness Program," featuring the Dakim System. This new program will provide a tool proven to improve the quality of life for seniors by maintaining a healthy brain.

From 11:30 to 2, the event will offer complimentary and confidential memory screening. To obtain such a screening, an appointment is required.

A memory screening is a simple and safe way to assess memory and other intellectual functions. The screening is not used to diagnose an illness but is a significant first step toward finding out if a more complete medical visit would be beneficial.

Memory screening makes sense for anyone concerned about memory loss. The Alzheimer's Foundation suggests you ask yourself the following questions if you have concerns: Am I becoming more forgetful? Do I have trouble concentrating? Do I have difficulty performing familiar tasks? Do I have trouble recalling words or names in conversation? Do I sometimes forget where I am or where I am going? Am I misplacing things more often? Have I become lost when walking or driving in a familiar area? Have others commented on changes in my behavior or mood?

If you have experienced any of these situations, a memory screening might be appropriate.

Don't miss out. Space is limited so make your reservations early by calling 497-0189 and don't forget, if you want a memory screening for yourself or a loved one, make that appointment when you are making your reservation.
