Aging Thousand Oaks couple still making weekly rounds for Meals on Wheels

By Dashiell Young-Saver, Special to the Acorn, December 22, 2011

Seventeen years ago Harry and Arlene Norkin, at ages 73 and 68, began delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors in the Thousand Oaks area. Now age 90 and 85, the couple continue to venture out every Thursday morning with a car full of food, volunteering their time and energy to provide sustenance for their grateful clients. “We have lived a good life, and a lot of people are not in as good a situation as we are,” said Harry, a Thousand Oaks resident for 46 years and grandfather of five. “If we don’t help them, who will?”

The couple are always the first to arrive at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center at 10:30 in the morning the day of their routes.

They pack the food into their car, get their list of clients and go from home to home delivering the meals and checking in on the recipients.

At the end of their busy route, which can include as many as 14 houses, the Norkins go out to lunch, usually at Baja Fresh, and reflect on their day. For them, the clients make it worth the effort. “We enjoy it. They love us and are always so happy to see us,” Arlene said.

The Meals on Wheels program is run by Senior Concerns, a nonprofit organization in Thousand Oaks that provides various services to seniors throughout the Conejo Valley. It delivers more than 47,000 meals annually to those who are homebound and cannot shop or cook.

“Delivering the meals gives seniors that small measure of independence that can keep them from having to move into nursing homes,” said Scott Porter, Senior Concerns’ food service coordinator, who’s run the program for the past two years.

With donations, payments and the work of about 75 volunteers, Meals on Wheels provides its services on a sliding pay scale and has never turned away anyone for financial reasons, Porter said. Meals on Wheels volunteers not only bring food, they also check on the status of their clients and provide them with company, he added. The bonds between clients and volunteers like the Norkins can be more friendship-based than professional. “( Harry and Arlene) have been doing it for so long that they’ve built relationships with the people. In some cases, the volunteers may be the only people the clients see all day,” Porter said. But with those strong bonds can come pain, Harry said.

The Norkins sometimes find clients’ names in the obituary section of the paper. In the past few weeks alone, three of the seniors they delivered to have died. “We try not to get too attached to the people. It’s hard,” Harry said. In addition to losses, the duo, who have been married for 65 years, must battle the effects of aging. Arlene has osteoarthritis in her knees, and Harry recently had aortic valve replacement surgery. Despite the health complications, they have not stopped delivering meals for longer than two months at a time.

“Life plays funny tricks on people,” Harry said. “I had to take a break because of my operation, but once I got started again, it was fine. We always manage to do it.” A retired engineer who has worked at Port Hueneme and Westinghouse Nuclear in Nevada, Harry also volunteers at the police department and the free clinic and is a member of the Council on Aging and the Goebel Senior Center Commission.

“I worked as an engineer for the Navy until I retired over 20 years ago,” Harry said. “All the volunteer work I do now is more work than that was.” “He loves what he does,” Arlene added. After she retired from her job as a salesperson, Arlene worked at the Senior Concerns thrift store before she began participating in the Meals on Wheels program. Harry acknowledged that in the future they may need Meals on Wheels as recipients. But until then, the Norkins do not plan to stop volunteering. “As long as we can do it, we will do it,” Harry said.

By Alicia Doyle, Ventura County Star, January 2, 2012

Senior advocate Brenda Birdwell will offer free information and referral services at the Moorpark Active Adult Center on the fourth Wednesday of the month starting Jan. 25.

Birdwell, who oversees advocacy and outreach at Senior Concerns in Thousand Oaks, said her areas of assistance would be housing, transportation, legal and health-related issues, in-home care, facility placement, government benefits and completing forms and applications.

Seniors will have a trained, unbiased advocate with their best interests in mind to guide them through potentially difficult situations, said Angel Sierra, active adult center supervisor.

"Ms. Birdwell will be offering free information and referral services of local resources that many senior may be unaware of," Sierra said. "Having access to someone who is knowledgeable and trained on local senior resources will enable seniors to seek information with ease and confidence."

Older adults' needs and concerns vary, Birdwell said.

"It could be anything from food to medical insurance and anything in between," she said. "There is also concern regarding programs that are legitimate versus scams, and identity theft."

Senior Concerns has been offering the free advocacy service for more than 25 years, said Lori Bliss, care coordinator and senior advocate for the nonprofit organization.

"It is and has been a valuable resource for countless seniors and their families who would not know where else to turn for help," Bliss said. "Our nonprofit's mission is to provide programs and services for aging seniors, families, caregivers and the community which support and improve their quality of life. With this in mind, we are trying to help as many people as we can make informed decisions about their health and welfare."

For more information call 517-6261.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special member of the Senior Concerns family, Dolores Spickelmier. Dolores was a devoted Meals On Wheels employee for 16 years, and a volunteer with us for 5 years prior to that. She is seen here in this photo from last week’s Staff Appreciation Party, where she received an award for her years of service. She passed away the morning of August 26, 2011. Dolores will be truly missed & our hearts go out to her family.

"I am grateful for the community support over the years who have made it possible to continue the promise that Senior Concerns will be there for future generations."

Senior Concerns is a private nonprofit in Thousand Oaks that's dedicated to serving the senior community — especially frail and special-need seniors.

Monday marked Freeman's last day on the job as president — a role she assumed in October 2006. Before that, she served on the board of directors as a volunteer for five years.

"I will continue to support the organization by proclaiming their story and value to all who will listen, give my financial support and any time they ask of me," Freeman said.

Freeman will be succeeded by Lori Litel of Valencia.

"My plans are to work with the dedicated staff, board of directors and other community stakeholders to create a strategic growth plan — both short- and long-term — for Senior Concerns," said Litel, who has taught social work and gerontology as a field professor for graduate students for 15 years. She also has extensive experience in all areas of nonprofit management.

"I have worked as an executive director for a large multipurpose center in the city of Los Angeles, which provided comprehensive programming and services for both active adults and frail seniors for more than 18 years," said Litel, who plans to relocate to Thousand Oaks. "I have an entrepreneurial spirit and a great passion for helping the most frail and vulnerable seniors in the community. This position will be a labor of love for me. I look forward to following in the very capable footsteps of Carol."

In retirement, Freeman plans "to explore a side of life I have never known — the nonworking world. Work was starting to interfere with my fun." She plans to "enjoy my home, maybe even organize the den. Or maybe my vegetable garden will actually live this year." She also plans to travel with her husband.

"There comes a time when one knows it is time to turn the reins of responsibility over to someone else," Freeman added. When she took the helm, "we had several years of deficit spending. We have turned that around by refining operations and finding new sources of funding through grants and even fundraising." Under her leadership, "we started several new programs such as Senior Chat, Brain Fitness and Memory Day." Still, "there are many things left to be done."

She continued, "Senior Concerns is entering a time of potential great expansion to provide much needed services in Simi Valley, Moorpark and other communities. Plus the wave of baby boomers coming our way will require new programs out in the community. It is an exciting time for someone to take the lead and continue that lead for many years."

Senior Concerns started 35 years ago as a grass-roots volunteer group with Meals on Wheels. It has expanded services to include adult day care for frail seniors, case management, senior advocacy, support groups and, most recently, brain fitness, according to Freeman.

"Our goal is to provide the resources and guidance necessary to seniors to remain in their own homes for as long as possible," she said. "Services are provided without fees or based on ability to pay. We are financially supported by our wonderful Bargain Boutique/Thrift store, grants and a generous community."

<img alt="Volunteer Bhojo Shahani, 86 (left), dances with Lucille Champagne at Senior Concerns in Thousand Oaks.

The Board of Directors of Senior Concerns is pleased to announce the appointment of Lori Litel, MSW, as the President of Senior Concerns. With twenty years of non-profit executive management and a high level of visionary leadership, the Board is confident that Ms. Litel will lead Senior Concerns into the future with enthusiasm and success.

Dedicating her career to making life better for seniors, Ms. Litel was the Executive Director of a major multipurpose senior center in the San Fernando Valley. While there, she was part of creating award-winning intergenerational programs for seniors, overseeing all senior programs and services including adult day programs, nutrition programs and community outreach to the benefit of seniors. She also realized a long time “dream” of a brand new, $12 million dollar state-of-the art facility for seniors.

Ms. Litel is certain her professional experiences and personal commitment will guide her as she assumes her new role as President of Senior Concerns. “I strongly believe in treating seniors with dignity and respect at all times, and have been a passionate advocate, particularly for the needs of the most frail and vulnerable seniors.” Her experiences are enhanced by her education, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Masters in Social Work, both from Boston College. She is also the recipient of multiple awards for her community involvement and public service.

Ms. Litel will join Senior Concerns on Monday, May 9th. Please join us in welcoming her to Senior Concerns as we continue our 35 year history of “Life with Dignity for aging seniors.”

Simi Valley Senior Center to help seniors prepare for emergencies

By Alicia Doyle, Friday, April 22, 2011

The Simi Valley Senior Center will host "Senior 911," an emergency preparedness workshop April 30, offering seniors information to be better prepared for life's unexpected emergencies.

"The biggest myth that most seniors have concerning emergencies is they think that the city has someone who is going to come rescue them immediately," said Laurie Dickinson, center supervisor. "Although the city has excellent Crisis Emergency Response Team volunteers, in the case of a major crisis, it may be some time before anyone is able to respond. That is why it is important that seniors be prepared and set up a plan in case of an emergency such as an earthquake to keep themselves safe — at least in the short term."

Geared for older adults and their families, the event is sponsored by Senior Concerns and Moving Seniors Forward. The event is free, with registration required by Tuesday.

"Seniors have special needs, and they will be specifically addressed at this seminar," said Carol Freeman, president of Senior Concerns. "All of us say we are going to check our homes to make sure they are safe tomorrow. The reality is that with baby boomers turning 65 this year, we are living in an aging society. It is important that seniors' special needs are addressed so that they have tools and a backup plan to remain safe."

Event presenters will include representatives from Gold Coast Ambulance, who will talk about personal medical emergencies. The Red Cross will discuss disaster response, the fire department will address household emergencies, and the Simi Valley Police Department will focus on home and personal security.

While some older adults believe they've learned how to protect themselves over the years — such as someone who survived an earthquake — "what a senior hasn't figured is that gas line is harder to turn with arthritis or maybe the water valve is rusted. A reminder to check them out now is wise," Freeman said.

"You may have a senior neighbor that you assume has a backup plan with friends or family in the event of an emergency, and they may have no one locally. It is important that we check on each other, especially our seniors," Freeman said.

Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable during emergency situations — earthquakes, severe weather and, even heat waves, Freeman added.

Disaster preparedness can seem daunting, but it's certainly doable, Freeman said.

"Getting prepared for disasters is something that can be quite easy," Freeman said. "It's a positive experience, and you'll feel good about it when you're done. It doesn't have to be overwhelming, and we know it is necessary."

I was fortunate to be invited to attend the Engaging the Aging consortium in Camarillo last Friday. I was impressed by the like-minded people in attendance who want to age well and make a positive difference. The day was all about possibilities and what we could accomplish by working together and not getting bogged down with rules currently in place or financing. At the end of the day, all 47 of us were tasked with identifying two things we could do, that could be accomplished, that could make a positive difference. The intergenerational idea mentioned at the end of the article was one of mine. ~ Brenda Birdwell, Program Development Coordinator

“I will miss the people and not just the staff,” Freeman, 66, said last week. “There’s nothing more rewarding than the very immediate gratification you get” from the job.

“I’ll call it that sense of purpose,” she said.

Tags: Carol Freeman,Retirement,Senior Concerns

Thousand Oaks mayor pro tem takes part in Mayors for Meals

By Alicia Doyle, Ventura County Star, Thursday, March 24, 2011

Emphasizing the need for additional support for Meals on Wheels, Jacqui Irwin, mayor pro tem of Thousand Oaks, spent Wednesday morning delivering dishes to those in the Senior Concerns coverage area.

"Meals on Wheels has been a valuable program since its first introduction by Senior Concerns," said Irwin, whose volunteer efforts were part of Mayors for Meals, a national day of recognition in which mayors across the country deliver meals for their local senior nutrition program on a designated day in March.

"It is truly my pleasure to volunteer," Irwin said. "I believe in the importance and the benefits of this program and will do my best to support their goals."

About 2,250 seniors are served by home-delivered meal programs throughout Ventura County, including 230 in the Thousand Oaks Senior Concerns program. The effort is a registered Meals on Wheels program but not part of the county system, said Carol Freeman, Senior Concerns president.

"Senior Concerns cooks all meals fresh and delivers a hot meal plus a fresh snack for later," Freeman said. "We deliver every day of the year except Christmas with volunteer drivers."

One of the biggest myths about Meals on Wheels is that the program is only for the poor, Freeman said.

"While many of our seniors are on a lower fixed income, many pay something toward the cost of their meals," Freeman said. "Many seniors do not have the physical or mental energy to prepare meals and therefore fail to eat properly. Sometimes it is the spouse of a senior with dementia and the burden of taking care of the other spouse ... is too much, or they just had surgery and can't stand or maneuver."

Another misunderstanding is that it's a government program and difficult to qualify for.

"A simple phone call this morning may have a meal delivered at noon. Then Senior Concerns pays a home visit and makes the rest happen," Freeman said.

When Senior Concerns started the program in 1976, it had five deliveries on the first day. Volunteers now make an average of 76 daily deliveries.

The program is supported by client fees, which are based on ability to pay; city and other private grants; and the annual Love Run, a major fundraiser for Senior Concerns.

"One of the greatest services our Meals on Wheels program provides is a daily well-being check," Freeman said. "A friendly face at the door of homebound, isolated seniors is sometimes the only social contact that occurs."

The program also tries to help seniors receive proper nutrition.

"A host of problems that we face as an aging society begin and end with food," said Susan White, senior nutrition program manager for the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. "Studies show that many of the diseases we deal with as adults are the result of our nutritional behavior over our life span."

It also seems everyone's life is rushed, Irwin said.

"It is important to take time to give back to the community, and what better place than to help our seniors, who have given so much to their families and our city in the past," Irwin said.

"Costs have escalated, and not all seniors have the resources to plan nutritionally balanced meals. The meals certainly provide healthful benefits, but I cannot stress enough the importance of the personal contact we share with the seniors."
Fundraiser for food program ~ 900 turn out for Love Run

Monday, June 8, 2009

More than 900 people turned out early Sunday morning in Westlake Village to take part in a charity race raising money to provide daily meals to the housebound and the elderly in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park.

The 16th annual Love Run, organized by Senior Concerns in Thousand Oaks, offered 5K and 10K races and a one-mile Family Fun Run.

The 2008 Love Run brought in $32,000 net with just fewer than 700 runners, and this year organizers hoped to raise $40,000.

“I’m quite confident at the moment we’ve reached our goal and probably exceeded it,” said Carol Freeman, the president of Senior Concerns, adding that she was “relieved” and “grateful” that so many people showed up to support the cause.

“Money is going away in other sources, and so fundraising is critical right now,” Freeman said.

The Love Run is the biggest fundraising event of the year for Senior Concerns, and all the money raised goes to benefit its Meals on Wheels program, which delivers affordable and nutritious meals to about 200 seniors. Last year, Senior Concerns delivered 47,884 meals with the help of 70 volunteers who donate their gas, time and vehicles, and the demand for the program continues to increase.

This year, Love Run organizers say, they reached out more than ever to the community hoping to attract more serious runners, corporate teams and vendors. It was the first time that microchip timing was used to time the runners, and the number of vendors with booths at the event was also higher than in previous years.

Last year 1100 volunteers donated 23,151 hours of their time and energy to Senior Concerns!

Senior Concerns is filled with inspiration and many examples. Examples of what you ask? Volunteering!! Over 1100 individuals share their time and talent at Senior Concerns by doing good things for seniors in our community.

Meals on Wheels – 101 Packers and Drivers

Bargain Boutique and Thrift Store- 66 sales and sorters

Adult Day Care – 933 Assistants and entertainers

Fundraising – priceless and numerous

A prime inspirational example is one of our founding volunteers, Betty Langlois. Moving to Thousand Oaks in the early sixties Betty saw many needs and set about fixing them. She was instrumental in the start of Manna by consolidating church pantries and storing the food supplies in a garage and forming Manna. Her attention was also drawn to isolated homebound seniors who could no longer prepare meals for themselves and Meals on Wheels was born as the first program of Senior Concerns with 5 homes receiving meals for the first time on June 16th, 1976. Today we visit almost 100 homes a day. Think you don’t have time to be inspirational, in addition to making all this happen Betty mothered twelve (12) children. She currently lives with a son in Simi Valley and during a recent visit to her home we had lively conversations while she held us accountable to what we do today.

Bhojo Shahani is a long time favorite volunteer in our Day Program. Every Monday morning finds him leading song and dance for the enjoyment and movement of the participants. Smiles abound and legs move to the beat of favorite oldies from swing, to a lively polka, to the Macarena. Bhojo is a retired physician from India and a talented dancer who dedicates his time and life to the well being of others. He also teaches dancing at the Goebel Center. At Senior Concerns he inspires with a beat!

Volunteers also come in groups. Organizations such as Westlake Village Rotary, Newbury Park Rotary, Kiwanis & WLV Women’s Club, Scout troops and church groups provide drivers for Meals on Wheels and greatly need help at the Thrift Store. Bethany Christian School entertains, Simon Foundation and Love on a Leash bring dogs and a 4-H club brings their rabbits and chickens. New groups and clubs are always welcome. Groups inspire collectively and share the duties amongst many willing hands. Call 805 497 0189 to inquire and inspire.

Strategic Vision – “Life with dignity for aging seniors”

The Senior Concerns Board of Directors, led by Vice Chair for Strategic Planning Ann Eklund, embarked on a major effort to review the status of the organization and establish goals and strategies for the future. These are hard economic times for business and non profit organizations. The Board wanted to ensure that programs offered by Senior Concerns were still of value to those we serve and assess what else we should or could be doing while at the same time being good financial stewards. The good news is that our programs are critical to the well being of seniors and future direction will expand them into other neighboring communities. And the even better news is our programs went far beyond our mission statement. So after much discussion to find the right words the mission and vision statements were revised to reflect our service to the entire community.

Mission
To provide program and services for the aging senior, families, caregivers and the community which support and improve their quality of life.

I am very happy with the care you provide! Your clients are your friends and always treated with the utmost dignity. I have recommended your facility to many others and will continue to do so. Thank you.

Mother looks forward to her days at the Center even though because of dementia she has difficulty participating in everything. She calls every morning to see if she’s going to the Center that day.

Your staff and program are excellent. Senior Concerns should be a role model for many other senior care centers. There is a need in so many communities. We are so fortunate that your organization is established in Thousand Oaks.

Many thanks for your blessings of food and care. I truly appreciate all your concern and love during difficult times.

The Meals on Wheels are such a blessing to me; such nice & friendly people deliver them and the food is so good & plentiful. I am very grateful. And oh: yesterday that so pretty (unexpected) gift basket! I cried…. Still discovering some special items. What a lovely surprise! Thank you & especially the lady that made it and brought it.

Fundraising in These Economic Times

Like every business and individual Senior Concerns has bills to pay, salaries, utilities, food, rent, fuel and like everyone else finds these economic times challenging and fearful. We are blessed with a generous community and for that we say a hearty thank you. Our funding comes from many sources
Private and governmental grants may face the greatest challenge for funding. As their investments assets and tax base shrink non profit organizations such as Senior Concerns and those we serve will pay the price. At the same time the ability to pay for services from those we serve will be less.

Senior Concerns faces dipping into hard earned reserves to meet our expenses this year. We at Senior Concerns have given a considerable amount of time and thought as to how to best serve our community while providing fund raising events that are appropriate and serve the best purpose.

We have made exciting changes to our upcoming Ultimate Dining 2009, allowing for greater participation while maintaining our high standard of food and wine. Our Good Food! Good Deed! promotion with Jersey Mikes Subs not only promotes the 5K and 10 K Love Run, additionally it will bring funds directly to Meals on Wheels by having participating Jersey Mike’s stores in Ventura County donate $1 for every #13 sold in the month of May. Support Senior Concerns and strengthen our community by patronizing our events as well as our generous sponsors. Please take a moment to make an additional donation either on our donation tab. Every dollar counts!

Senior Concerns would like to thank the following sponsors who have pledged their support for the 2009 Love Run:

From the President...Inspired by the Best

By Carol Freeman

I am fortunate to have so many inspirational examples who have led me while helping others. My mother, Girl Scout leader who taught me how to tie a square knot, 4-H leader who taught me to sew, volunteers at Los Robles Hospital who taught me the value of being a volunteer, Senior Concerns volunteers who continually show me the value of a caring heart. For my own self, volunteering is a way of life. It brings much more than it takes and I am blessed for it. Make your own decision to “inspire by example” simply by responding to our call for volunteers on this web site.

Senior Concerns recently completed a strategic planning process and is stronger and more clearly directed thanks to our caring volunteer Board Members who take their duties seriously. I am continuously inspired by their work and grateful for their dedication to Senior Concerns.

A Love Beyond Memory (By: Colleen Cason Ventura County Star)

Senior Concern's own Cy and Edna Johnson are featured in a Valentines Day article published in the Ventura County Star on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Click "More" below to read the entire article.

Cy Johnson escorted his wife of 62 years to a Valentine’s dance on Friday at Senior Concerns with no intention of inviting her onto the floor.

Yet staffers at the Thousand Oaks adult day program, where the couple are regulars, consider Cy a sweetheart of a guy.

“He always kisses her and tells her he loves her,” said Maureen Symonds, director of programs at Senior Concerns, which held the dance for a few dozen frail elderly clients.

Since 83-year-old Edna Johnson was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years ago, Cy finds himself in the always complex and sometimes exhausting dance of spouse-turned-caregiver.

An 85-year-old retired Air Force officer, he has joined the ranks of the almost 10 million Americans caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s.

Edna speaks little these days, but Cy hangs on her every word. Just last week, she said of her husband: “I do not know his name.”

“That is six whole words,” said Cy, elated. “That’s the most she’s said in months.

“I say ‘I love you’ 100 times a day,” he declared in his Georgia accent.

In a small voice, with her lips frozen, Edna replies “I love you, too.”

“Passion lasts for the first four years,” said Lisa Hayden, a specialist in the psychology of caregivers.

“What keeps people together is shared experiences and dependability,” added Hayden, who is the study director at the Veterans Administration’s West Los Angeles Healthcare Center.

For the first four years after Edna’s diagnosis, the Johnsons kept up a busy social and travel schedule. But in January of last year, she broke her hip while in the hospital. Since then she has been in a wheelchair and her dementia has worsened, Cy said.

In the cockpit of World War II-era bombers, Cy learned how to navigate by the moon and Jupiter. Now he is navigating the highs and lows of being a caregiver. While taking on more tasks, such as dressing, bathing and changing her, he is losing her companionship.

After she insisted he was not her husband, Cy tacked up their marriage license on a bulletin board above the hospital-style bed where she sleeps.

As he gazes at a ’50s-era portrait of Edna, a “wow” comes out the back of his throat.

Their meeting, the way Cy tells it, is like a dialogue from a 1940s romantic comedy. Edna Pearl Hill walked into the Officers Club at Rattlesnake Bomber Base in Pyote, Texas, west of Midland-Odessa. The base librarian, she was on the arm of a strapping young captain.

Cy, then a lieutenant, told his buddy that someday she would come in here without that captain, and he would ask her out.

When that happened, Cy wasted no time approaching her.

“I asked her if she had a book on how to ask a librarian out on a date.”

“No. But I’ll put one on order,” Edna replied in her Texas drawl,

They married on March 8, 1946, and have three children. They traveled to 30 countries. They settled in Thousand Oaks in 1964, after Cy left the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel.

Their living room is lined with Edna’s paintings of the scenes and people of Asia. Above the fireplace is a portrait of a geisha and samurai — the last picture she ever painted.

Just recently he removed the art supplies from the shelves in her bedroom. They had collected dust — something Cy notices now that he is in charge of the housework.

On a recent Thursday, Edna was in their den, working on wooden puzzles with her caregiver Yolanda Baker.

Baker is one of three godsends, according to Cy. The others are Meals on Wheels and Senior Concerns.

Studies show that 65 percent of caregivers die before the person they are caring for passes away. Symonds, of Senior Concerns, said caregivers try to take on too much and hit the wall.

Respite programs like the adult day center give caregivers a chance to pay the bills, shop and socialize while their spouses are looked after, she noted.

It’s also a place where caregivers can come to realize they are not alone.

Bud Wandrey’s wife, Penny Deakin, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001, after they had been married 32 years.

“I lost my friend and now I’ve got a little girl I love,” said the 73-year-old retired aerospace engineer, who settled Deakin in the activities room before attending his support group meeting.

For the party, Wandrey dressed Deakin in a red jumpsuit, red sneakers, Valentine socks and topped off the ensemble with a red-spangled baseball cap.

“The other day I said ‘I love you’ and she winked at me,” Wandrey said.

Young love may demand great gestures; old love may well rest in the details. And on the morning of the Valentine’s event, Cy had an emergency. Their adult daughter had just been taken to the hospital after a seizure.

While paramedics tended to her, Cy dressed Edna, helped her in and out of her wheelchair and dropped her off for day care at Senior Concerns.

Before he wheeled her into the dance, he pulled two headbands out of a paper bag. He asked a staff member to pick the one that best matched Edna’s sweater.

In the Christmas letter of 2008, he wrote: “No trips to visit friends or relatives, no social events. As boring as that sounds I can’t imagine my life without Edna’s darling expressions.”

Even though she may not know her husband’s name, she probably senses he is an important part of her life, Hayden said. Studies show Alzheimer’s patients react physically to a loved one’s presence. Their heart rate may increase and their breathing becomes faster.

Hayden puts it this way: “The love endures, even if all the details don’t.”

Senior Advocacy Services Provide Assistance

“Mary Butler is just the very best there is for us,” said Josephine Wiley, resident since 1993 at the Florence Janss senior housing complex off Brazil St. in Thousand Oaks. “Representing Senior Concerns Senior Advocacy Services, Mary calmly and firmly helps us through the health, financial and legal issues we face with insurers, medical care providers and government agencies, among others. Without her wide knowledge, personal contracts, confidence and gentle direction, we’d often waste a lot of time and effort.
Jo is one of dozens of residents at the Janss and TaFoya Terrace apartments in Moorpark who have met on site to resolve a range of personal issues and opportunities that regularly confront seniors. The Florence Janss and Tafoya Terrace services were inaugurated in May 2006 as a landmark partnership with the Area Housing Authority and Senior Concerns funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. (maybe a group picture of residents)

In addition to the work at the senior housing complexes, Senior Advocacy Services at Senior Concerns is helping seniors and their families with care management through office and in-home needs assessment and evaluation, support, community resource linkage and education. Services are offered at
• Goebel Senior Center
• Simi Valley Adult Senior Center
• Senior Concerns Center on Hodencamp Road
• In home assessments by appointment

Staff members include Toni Hagopian, Lori Bliss, Mary Butler and Betty Berry.. Collectively they bring years of combined experience in care planning and assistance for families coping with the challenge of elder care. (Group picture)

Senior Advocate Betty Berry may be the most famous of the group with her weekly column in the Ventura County Star and many public education classes throughout the County. “Caring for an Aging Loved One” is available for businesses to offer to their employees on site as a “lunch and learn” program.

Caring for a loved one changes family roles and takes physical and emotional energy, time, financial resources, and is made a little easier if professional assistance is involved in the planning. The Senior Advocacy Services does just that. Additional information or appointments can be obtained by calling Senior Concerns at 805 497 0189 or by visiting our website www.seniorconcerns.org.

Ultimate Dining Experience

On Sunday, August 5, 2008 six notable chefs, as well as Wedell Cellars of Arroyo Grande, Opolo Vineyards, Wades Wines and The Wineyard collaborated for what has become known as the Ultimate Dining Experience. Held at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza in Westlake Village, this event was once again a triumphant success for Senior Concerns, with all profits going toward quality of life services and programs for seniors in Ventura and western L.A. counties.

Don Hegarty, Business Manager for Senior Concerns was pleased to note that "we did better than the previous year despite the current economic conditions."

The event featured seven separate courses prepared by John Foerster of the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, Tommaso Barletta of Tuscany II Ristorante, Sylvain Rivet of Amuse Bouche, Phyllis Vaccarelli of the Westlake Culinary Institute, Kristen Ofeldt of Cafe Firenze, and Amy McNelis of Bellavino Wine Bar and Restaurant.

With spectacular food and an array of silent auction items, the highlight of the evening was the outpouring of generosity shown by those attending. Many attendees pledged financial gifts during the "Fund A Need" portion of the auction which provides for the sponsorship of individual seniors at Senior Concerns center.

Event Chair Andrea Gallagher remarked, "UDE delivered great food from local chefs, great California wines and an entertaining evening devoted to supporting our community's seniors."

With plans already in the making, the 2009 Ultimate Dining Experience promises to be an event worth attending with showcase wines and savory creations by some of the areas finest chefs.

IRA Rollover Tax Free

Just this month Congress passed the "Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008" (In Division C of H.R. 1424 Sec. 408(d)(8)(A)) extending an excellent charitable planning opportunity for both 2008 and 2009. This act permits an IRA owner age 70½ or older to make a direct transfer to charity. The transfer may be up to $100,000 in one year and this IRA rollover will exist for year 2008 and year 2009. If you have not yet taken your IRA withdrawal for this year this may represent a good opportunity to make a gift and minimize the taxable income resulting from the mandated withdrawal of IRA funds.

The donation must be a direct transfer to qualify and may be only a portion or all of the required withdrawal. Contact your IRA custodians to arrange for the IRA charitable rollover.

If you happened to have been anywhere near Westlake Village on Sunday, June 1st you probably were witness to the legions of runners who participated in the fifteenth annual Love Run. The 5k and 10k Love Run race benefits the Meals on Wheels program, providing nutritious meals to homebound seniors and the disabled.

Gold sponsor for the event, California-American Water Company, played a significant role in race preparations and cultivating supporters for this event. Festivities following the races included a DJ, bounce house for children, and vendor booths. The race itself was on a USATF- certified out and back flat course that partially circled scenic Westlake Lake and culminated at Brent’s Delicatessen, a sponsor of the event. The top three male and female finishers in all age groups received awards.

The Love Run is known for its community friendly atmosphere and for its ability to provide funding for much needed vital services for seniors. Dale Shagrin, volunteer coordinator for the event stated, “I believe in doing something good for the senior community. This is the perfect philanthropic event- you are helping seniors while getting to participate in something that is athletic and family oriented.” For information on Love Run 2009 visit the Senior Concerns website.

Make a Lasting Difference - Planned Giving

All of us would like to leave a legacy for those we love. Whether we’re handing down life lessons or tangible heirlooms, it is important to share a piece of ourselves with the next generation. These legacies offer us a way to be remembered and the opportunity to set examples for others to follow.

Senior Concerns would be privileged to be a recipient of your legacy. How? Simply arrange for a planned gift through your estate planning. There are many types of planned gifts that will not only support Senior Concerns but can also provide you with benefits. You may receive a guaranteed additional lifetime income, significant tax benefits, and or charitable income tax deductions.

Naming Senior Concerns as a beneficiary in your will or living trust is the easiest form of planned giving. You may also name us as a beneficiary or percentage beneficiary of your life insurance policy or retirement plan. If you are interested in lifetime income and have cash, appreciated securities, or real estate to donate, explore the idea of a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Charitable Remainder Trust.

Contact Carol Freeman, President of Senior Concerns to discuss how Senior Concerns can help you achieve your financial and charitable goals and help you make a difference for the future. By the way if you have already named Senior Concerns as a beneficiary would you be kind enough to let us know so we can a proper and grateful thank you.

If only you could sit in my chair each day you would see the value you get for each dollar given. Folks from 60 to 102 singing, dancing, listening to stories or even better telling us stories from their wonderful years. Grateful families who know they can go to work or home to catch a few minutes of rest with peace of mind. Phone calls from Meals on Wheels recipients saying thanks, “because of your meals I have eaten better and haven’t been in the hospital for a year”. I assure we will be good stewards of the dollars you entrust to our care. And, I say THANK YOU.

Seeking Fun and Friendship by Maureen Symonds

Senior Concerns provides a safe environment for
having fun, out of the house with other good friends
to reduce isolation or TV boredom...

What do chickens, May Pole dancing, art classes, ice cream socials and bus trips have in common? You don’t have to find the hidden answer at the end of this page. Just look at the pictures. They are all “Funseekers” activities. What is Funseekers? It is a vibrant active program at Senior Concerns.

Maureen Symonds, Senior Concerns Director of Programs, says the purpose is to provide activities adapted for seniors with limitations that may be physical, require special equipment, mental or emotional. Some people find participation in other senior center programs too demanding or do not provide sufficient staff assistance. Senior Concerns provides a safe environment for having fun, out of the house with other good friends to reduce isolation or TV boredom. Operating two days a week, the other benefit of the program is to provide a respite time for family members.

Most days about 22 seniors enjoy such activities as word games, trivia competition, book discussions, yoga, tai chi, karaoke, travel presentations or musical entertainment. The group also has enjoyed field trips to local plays at the Civic Arts Plaza, sneak peek of the new Four Seasons Hotel, visits to the local library, Stagecoach Museum, Ventura Museum and shopping trips. Starting two years ago, the program is funded by a grant from The California Wellness Foundation. Created in 1992 as an independent, private foundation, TCWF’s mission is to improve the health of people of California by making grants for health promotion, wellness education and disease prevention. Senior Concerns is deeply grateful for this grant and all the support we receive from our community. Such funding allows us to continue our mission of serving special-need and frail seniors without regard for the ability to pay.

Shuttle Transportation

Shuttle bus transportation primarily serving Conejo Valley seniors with medical appointments at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Woodland Hills got underway
February 1st of this year on a two-day-a-week, three round trips-each-day schedule.
The Shuttle also stops at the Warner Transit Center in Woodland Hills.

Senior Concerns is managing the Tuesday and Thursday service under a threeyear
federal grant administered through the Ventura County Transportation
Commission and the City of Thousand Oaks Transportation Department. A ninepassenger,
wheelchair-accessible van has been provided by Roadrunner Shuttle.

“We are very pleased to help provide this service for those for whom auto
transportation is limited or cannot afford the regular round-trip cab fare of some $80
to Woodland Hills,” Toni Hagopian, Senior Concerns Advocate said.

Endorsing the new Shuttle, Roy C. Myers, transportation analyst for the City of
Thousand Oaks, said,”Current demand is great for public transportation, but service
has been inconvenient, expensive and not near direct. We are committed to providing
local senior citizens with safe, affordable and accessible service.”

To date over 300 trips have been made and we expect that the Shuttle will
continue to grow as a welcome addition to the quality-of-life services Senior Concerns
has provided to frail and special-need seniors and their caregiver families in Ventura
and western Los Angeles counties since l975.

Detailed information on the new public service, called the Senior Concerns
Shuttle, is available from Toni Hagopian at Senior Concerns, phone (805) 341-8004.
Senior round-trip passenger fare is $10. Reservations are a must!

Beginning a New Adventure by Carol Freeman

As I settle into this new role as President of Senior Concerns, I am excited about the future ahead, not only for me personally, but also and most importantly the future of Senior Concerns. As a longtime community supporter and
former Board Member I am honored to be trusted with this leadership.

Thirty-two years ago a few community leaders saw a need and met it by starting Senior Concerns with our first program, Meals on Wheels. Today Senior Concerns continues to identify needs and meets them as you will see from the articles in this newsletter. During the next decade the Baby Boomer generation, the most populous in history, will retire. Some will start second careers, some will volunteer or
just spend glorious time at play. Some unfortunately will become frail and have special needs. With the vision of our founders, Senior Concerns will
continue its mission to meet those needs and as always without reference to
the ability to pay. I look forward to our exciting future!
