Leadership and Excellence Awards Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell has launched a new awards program to honor community leaders.

Five recipients of the first District 2 Supervisorial Leadership and Excellence Awards were honored May 21 during a ceremony at Amgen headquarters in Thousand Oaks.

Gorell said the inaugural celebration honored “great navigators” of District 2,“Exceptional individuals who have shown extraordinary leadership in public safety, education, prosperity and economy, conservation and environmentalism and community leadership.”

George Lange, director of the Conejo Recreation and Park District and Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy board member, won the Conservation and Environmentalism Award for his work preserving over 500 acres of parkland.

Senior Concerns Executive Director Andrea Gallagher won the Community Leadership Award for building a network of services to support aging with dignity.

The Education Award was given to Michelle Taranto, an educator and student advocate who pioneered Conejo Valley High School’s first Career and Technical Education Sound Engineering course.

VCFD Captain Bret Chambers won the Public Safety Award for his work during the Mountain Fire where he demonstrated extraordinary bravery protecting lives and homes at the same time his own home was lost to flames.

Danielle Borja, president and CEO of the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, won the Prosperity and Economy Award for her work driving economic development and tourism.

Proceeds of the event will support Mountain Fire relief efforts through the Ventura County Community Foundation.
