This October, Senior Concerns is unveiling their new professional series designed for service providers and volunteers supporting seniors and family caregivers. The first program, FROM ARGUMENT TO AGREEMENT:  Building positive outcomes for seniors and their families is a six-hour course offered on three consecutive Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30pm, October 8, 15 and 22, at Senior Concerns, 401 Hodencamp Road, Thousand Oaks. Professionals often witness conflicts between adult children and their aging parents. Attendees will learn communication tools using a person-centered approach to manage highly emotional interactions. This program will also explore how to increase the adult child’s empathy for the aging parent. This highly-interactive program includes many case studies and opportunities to practice the communication techniques being taught.  The learning objectives of this series include the following; how to demonstrate strategies for managing the emotions which affect decision making: denial, guilt, fear and anger, how to identify how to encourage seniors, who are refusing to make the necessary changes for their health and safety, to make better decisions, discuss how to balance the needs of the senior with the needs of the family and practice mediation techniques to reduce conflicts and ways to increase compassion and respect. Course instructor, Viki Kind, is a clinical bioethicist, medical educator and hospice volunteer. Her award winning book, “The Caregiver’s Path to Compassionate Decision Making: Making Choices For Those Who Can’t,” guides families and professionals through the difficult process of making decisions for those who have lost capacity. She has lectured across the United States teaching professionals to have integrity, compassion and to improve care through better communication. Patients, families and healthcare professionals rely on Viki’s practical approach to dealing with challenging dilemmas. Early bird pricing for the series is $69 by September 27 th and $89 thereafter.  This program qualifies for 5 hours of continuing nursing education (CNE). RSVP to (805) 497-0189 More …
