QUESTION: I have just heard about a program called CarFit. Do you have any information about that program?
ANSWER: Sure do – CarFit is a program that provides a quick, yet comprehensive review of how well you and your vehicle work together.
CarFit is not a driving test nor does it focus on the ability of the driver. During a 20-minute CarFit session trained technicians recommend personal vehicle adjustments and adaptations to help drivers 55 and older use their vehicle features properly for maximum comfort and safety.
During the 20 minute session the  technician completes a 12-point checklist. Among the items·checked are inspection for the correct position of the driver’s seat, the driver’s ability to easily reach the pedals, the proper adjustment of mirrors, the proper function of lights and signals and the driver’s familiarity and operation of vehicle controls.
The session also provides an opportunity to open a positive conversation about driver safety and provide specific community resources to help older drivers stay healthy and continue to drive safely.
Senior drivers should ask themselves if they are comfortable and in control behind the wheel. Do they have a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, is there plenty of room between their breastbone and the air bag and is the head restraint properly adjusted.
The car seat should fit comfortably and safely and the driver should be able to adjust the seat for good visibility and easy access to the vehicle controls. There should be easy access to gas and brake pedals and the seat belt should hold the driver in the proper position and should be comfortable.
