QUESTION:  If I remember correctly Cypress Place Senior Living hosts an event each year to honor our veterans.  Will they be doing that again this year?

ANSWER:  The “10th Annual Salute Our Veterans” event is scheduled for Wednesday June 27 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Cypress Senior Living.  The theme for this year’s event will be “If You’re Free, Thank a Vet” and pins with that saying on them will be available at the event.

A Bagpipe processional led by renowned Pipe Major Bill Boetticher will lead the tribute followed by a military Color Guard presentation and a special veteran recognition along with recognition of widows and widowers of veterans.

Captain Douglas W. King, Chief Staff Officer for Naval Base Ventura County will be the keynote speaker.  County Veteran Services Officer Mike McManus will read the classic poem “In Flanders Field” and will give the history and significance of this piece of literature.

Ventura City Fire Chief David Endaya and Ventura Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Stephanie Caldwell will offer special words and thanks for the veterans’ services and sacrifice for our country.

The event will also include a flag folding ceremony and the playing of TAPS will close this most powerful event.  Following the program attendees will enjoy a BBQ lunch, the Veteran’s Memorabilia Display and live musical entertainment.

There will also be a retired Bell UH-1 “HUEY” MEDEVAC Army helicopter on display — something not often seen.  “Touching History” a private war memorabilia will also be on display.

Cypress Place Senior Living is located at 1200 Cypress Point Lane in Ventura.  Free shuttle parking will be available at the Universalist Church of Ventura (corner of Ralston Street and Cypress Point Place.)  Reservations can be made by calling 1-805-650-8000.

This event is free and open to the public – all veterans are encouraged to attend with their families, friends and neighbors.

QUESTION:  I attend many of the lectures and classes that are offered by our local senior centers.  I’m looking for something light to start off the summer.  Is there anything coming up?

ANSWER:  I have just the event to fill your request and to start off the summer season.

The Simi Valley Senior Center Performing Arts Group will be performing their original musical comedy, “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” at the Simi Valley Senior Center.  There will be two showings – a matinee on Thursday June 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and an evening performance on Friday June 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

This year’s summer production finds a lively group of retired chorus girls on a hilarious road trip to visit their old casino before it is slated to be torn down.  A little mishap on the way doesn’t get them down – they put it to good use.  Come enjoy the trip with the girls.

Admission is free and all seniors and their friends are encouraged to come out and enjoy the show and refreshments.  No reservations are required but seating is limited – so plan to arrive early.

The Simi Valley Senior Center is located at 3900 Avenida Simi in Simi Valley.  For more information call the center at 1-805-583-6363.

This group always puts on a great show so plan to come and enjoy a few laughs.
