Q:  How can I get through December and feel ready and motivated for the New Year?

A:  People handle the last month of the year in many ways. If you are like me, this entire month becomes like one big to-do list. I feel the stress before we enter Thanksgiving, and it usually stays with me until the New Year.

I find that at this time of year I have a laundry list of things to do. This includes buying presents, providing thanks to those who have helped me throughout the year, getting holiday cards mailed (which means updating everyone’s addresses), planning holiday fun things to do, and more.

I also use this time to compile my photos throughout the year into one printed photo book that I keep of our memories. I even load my next year’s calendar with important dates and vacations.

While I find it stressful, I use the stress to motivate myself and keep a running tab on what I have left to do. Then as each item is completed, I enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.

For me, this is my ritual of ending the year. It is busy, but also fun and fulfilling. Then after the New Year I take down all the holiday cards that I have hung on my wall and clean the house. That signifies a new year and fresh start.

For others, this time of year can feel like a burden. Stress does not feel productive, but rather can feel cumbersome.

When the stress is not productive for you, this means it is time to make some changes. Look at what is on your December to-do list and modify it. Maybe that means buying gift cards rather than worrying about getting each person the perfect gift. Or saying no to holiday events that you do not enjoy.

Instead, you may want to use this time to reflect on the past year and prepare for the new one. Here are some ideas on ways you can start fresh in 2024.

Clean out your closet and donate clothing you have not worn all year. Do a deep clean of your fridge and throw out all the old condiments. Reach out and connect with old friends and family who you have been too busy to visit with.

Buy a 2024 calendar or planner and mark things to look forward to in the next year. Look up new recipes and stock your fridge with healthy foods.

Enjoy a recap of your favorite music from the year. Music can be a great motivator and mood enhancer. Start your morning by playing a favorite upbeat song.

Look forward to the rest of December as a chance to cleanse and refresh before entering the New Year. But also keep in mind that motivation, just like desserts, can be best in moderation too. You do not need to put pressure on yourself to have everything in order this month. Start small, visualize the month the way you want to, and enjoy the holiday season.
