Q: My mother has decided to live in Thousand Oaks. She will need to meet other people her age, but she hesitates to reach out. Do you have suggestions? A: I sure do. The Goebel Community Adult Center sponsors programs, activities, classes and trips. Because your mother knows no one at the center, she might hesitate to take that first step, but I think you can overcome that problem. The center has monthly orientation meetings to make newcomers more comfortable on their first visit. You may come along with her if you would like. The next orientation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18. Visitors will get an overview of the center’s activities and services and tour the facility. One of the center’s most popular programs is the Conejo Senior Volunteer Program. Seniors may share their time, skills, energy and interests while making new friends and giving to the community. The center is at 1385 E. Janss Road. To reserve a spot at the next orientation, call 381-2744. Q: Are there any seminars planned on the growing fraud problem? A: Yes. The Fraud Prevention Summit will present a panel discussion from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Goebel Community Adult Center in Thousand Oaks. The presentation will cover types of fraud and be presented by those who work with fraud daily. Visitors will hear from law enforcement agencies including the FBI and the Senior Medicare Patrol.
